Your students can research dinosaurs in general or a specific dinosaur. Triceratops, stegosaurus, brachiosaurus, and t.rex are featured in this resource, but there’s also blank options for other dinosaurs.

Here’s everything that’s included in these information report template and activities –

• There are 5 informational reading passages (for dinosaurs, triceratops, stegosaurus, brachiosaurus, and t.rex). Each passage comes in two versions. Version 1 is a simplified text ideal for independent student use or for struggling readers. Version 2 has similar content but is written with more detail and slightly more complex vocabulary. It’s ideal for a teacher to read aloud or it can be read independently by some students.
• There are 6 graphic organizers (planning pages for the writing piece). They feature dinosaurs, triceratops, stegosaurus, brachiosaurus, and t.rex, as well as a blank version for any other dinosaur. This is where students can take notes from the reading passage or from their own research.
• There are four lined writing pages (dotted and plain) and seven craft toppers. There are two ‘all about dinosaurs’ toppers, as well as triceratops, stegosaurus, brachiosaurus, and t.rex. There’s even a blank option for students to draw their own dinosaur. An instruction page is included for how to make the craft. Students can write as much as they want (they can glue extra lined pages underneath).

Differentiation

This resource is great for differentiation. The 2 versions of reading passages, non-lined graphic organizers, dotted and plain line writing pages, and extra pages allow you to cater to all learners within your classroom.

You might also be able to use this project even if you change grade levels, as it suits 1st-3rd grade.

While completing this project, students will be working on a variety of skills and subject areas:

• Reading (the passages are a great informational text read and respond)
• Writing (the craft writing piece is perfect for writing an information report when teaching expository writing)
• Fine motor (the craft allows students to cut, color, and glue)

This expository writing project can cover 2, 3, or even 4 lessons! This would be a fun task to leave with a sub (to save you planning multiple lessons). It would also be an engaging activity if you’re having a lesson observation.
