Struggling to Teach Sentence Writing? Try These Roll-a-Sentence Phonics Activities

If you teach kindergarten or first grade, you already know the challenge: your students are still learning to decode simple words, yet they’re expected to write complete sentences. It can feel like you’re trying to build a bridge while the foundation is still being laid.

Some students can read CVC words but freeze when it’s time to write. Others can generate ideas but don’t have the phonics skills to get their thoughts onto paper. And then there are the students who simply disengage because writing feels too hard.

This is where roll-a-sentence phonics activities can completely change the game.

Why Roll-a-Sentence Activities Work

Roll-a-sentence activities combine phonics, sentence building, and writing practice into one simple, structured routine. Students roll a die, read the words in each column, and build a sentence step by step. It sounds simple, but the impact is huge.

Here’s why teachers are loving this approach:

1. They bridge the gap between phonics and writing
Students often learn phonics skills in isolation—CVC words one week, digraphs the next—but struggle to apply them in real writing. Roll-and-read sentence activities give them immediate practice using those phonics patterns in context, helping everything click.

2. They support struggling writers
Instead of staring at a blank page, students are given a clear structure. This reduces overwhelm and builds confidence. Even your most reluctant writers can successfully create a sentence.

3. They reinforce decoding and fluency
Because students must read each word before writing it, they are getting repeated exposure to decodable words and sentence patterns. This strengthens both decoding skills and reading fluency.

4. They’re perfect for literacy centers
If you’re juggling small groups, independent work, and rotations, you need activities that run themselves. Roll-a-sentence tasks are low prep, easy to explain, and highly engaging, making them ideal for literacy centers or morning work.

5. They make writing fun (yes, really)
Adding a dice element instantly increases engagement. Students love the unpredictability and often end up with silly sentences—which means more motivation to read and write.

A Simple Way to Differentiate

One of the biggest challenges in early literacy is meeting students where they are. In a single classroom, you might have students working on basic CVC words while others are ready for blends or long vowels.

Roll-a-sentence activities make differentiation easy because you can target specific phonics skills:

  • CVC sentence writing for beginners learning short vowel words
  • CVCe (silent e) sentences for long vowel practice
  • Digraph sentences (sh, ch, th, wh) for more advanced decoding
  • Blends sentence writing for students ready to tackle consonant clusters

This means you can provide targeted phonics practice while still working on the same overall skill: sentence writing.

Real Classroom Impact

Teachers often notice a shift quickly when they introduce these activities.

Students who used to say “I don’t know what to write” now have a starting point.
Students who struggled to spell words begin applying phonics patterns more confidently.
And students who were disengaged start to look forward to writing time.

It also helps build important conventions like:

  • Capital letters at the beginning of sentences
  • Spaces between words
  • Punctuation at the end

All within a meaningful, structured task.

Making It Work in Your Classroom

You can use roll-a-sentence activities in so many ways:

  • Literacy centers
  • Small group instruction
  • Independent practice
  • Morning work
  • Early finisher tasks

They’re especially powerful when aligned with the phonics skill you’re currently teaching. For example, if you’re working on digraphs, students can immediately apply that learning by building and writing digraph sentences.

A Ready-to-Go Solution

If you love the idea but don’t have time to create everything yourself, I’ve put together a set of roll-a-sentence phonics resources designed specifically for kindergarten and first grade classrooms.

These include:

  • CVC roll and read sentence activities
  • Digraph sentence building (sh, ch, th, wh)
  • Initial and final blends sentence activities
  • CVCe (silent e) sentence writing practice

Each resource is designed to be decodable, structured, and easy to use, so your students can focus on building confidence in both reading and writing.

Instead of spending hours creating materials or trying to scaffold writing from scratch, you can have a consistent, effective routine that supports phonics, sentence structure, and writing all at once.

If sentence writing has been a struggle in your classroom, you’re not alone. But sometimes, it’s all about giving students the right structure.

Roll-a-sentence activities do exactly that. And once you try them, you might find they become one of your most-used tools for phonics practice, literacy centers, and early writing success.

I think when a TpT seller is struggling with sales I think when a TpT seller is struggling with sales, they assign blame to their catalogue of products.
“Maybe I don’t have enough?”

You probably have plenty of products. But you may have a visibility problem which means that they aren’t being seen.

Check your data to see if you’re struggling with views across your store.

SEO is a great step! In some niches, that’s enough.

However, in competitive ones, marketing is also necessary.

If you’d like to learn how to market on Pinterest, there’s only a few days left where Terrific Pinning open!

Does how many TpT followers you have matter? Does Does how many TpT followers you have matter?
Does how long you’ve been selling impact anything?
Does how many products you have predict success?

No. You can succeed on TPT whether you’re a new or a veteran seller, whether you have 100 products or 500 products, whether you have 1000 followers or 10,000 followers.

None of that is the predictor of your earnings.

So what is? It’s views.

If you have a view problem in your store and you get consistently low views across your resources, you’re going to sell less units, and therefore make less money. It’s a simple as that!

If you want to make more sales, increase your views.

SEO, covers, and marketing are the things that will help here.

If you’d like to learn how to use Pinterest, my best selling Pinterest course for TPT sellers, Terrific Pinning, is open for a few more days!

Product creation matters. Optimization matters. Product creation matters.
Optimization matters.
Marketing matters too.

All three go hand-in-hand to create a successful business.

If your store is lacking in views, perhaps you are relying too much on product creation.

Making another product is not always the answer.
Even if a new product does well, it’s not going to make the rest of your store suddenly sell.

Sometimes you need to get eyes on the products you already have.

Terrific Pinning is open this week if you’d like to learn how to use Pinterest to get more eyes on your store :)

Product creation is important! It should be your p Product creation is important! It should be your priority when you are a brand new seller and it should continue to be something that you spend time on as you grow.

However, the problem comes when sellers have lots of products but are struggling with their sales and think that churning out another product is going to magically fix it.

Spoiler alert – it’s not!

Even if by luck, that product suddenly does well, it’s not going to make the rest of the products in your store start selling.

There’s a big problem to fix and it’s often that you aren’t getting views. You’re not ranking high enough on TpT.

Search engine optimization is the first line of defense and it’s something that’s really, really important. But it doesn’t work wonders in over saturated and competitive niches.

Once you’ve done all the SEO you can, you have to bring your own traffic! This is where marketing comes in.

I don’t recommend overwhelming yourself with multiple platforms. One is a great place to start.

If you were to start marketing, where do you think the best place is?
