Use monthly writing prompts to encourage writing in the classroom and watch your students become amazing authors! Monthly writing prompts are fun because they are made specifically for each month and can match the holidays or themes associated with each month.
Teaching writing can be challenging for many reasons, like a lack of a curriculum, time, or the imagination to create writing resources. Students want a new topic every day, and it can be hard to think of enough topics to meet your students’ needs!

Ideas For Using Monthly Writing Prompts
Monthly writing prompts can be used for so many activities in the classroom besides a traditional writing time.
- Morning work
- Center activity
- Project for early finishers
- Resources for homework
- Transition activity
Using writing prompts for morning work or during center time is a great way to encourage writing in a more relaxed environment. Students may not feel forced to deliver a stellar piece of work and can have fun and use their imaginations to make a creative piece.
Early finishers can work on a writing prompt while other students finish their work. I love using monthly writing prompts for this because the students are working quietly, improving handwriting, and expanding their imaginations. The writing prompts can be more difficult for your more advanced students and give them an outlet to be challenged.
Writing prompts are an easy resource to send home for extra practice. I have parents every year ask me; what can I be doing at home for practice? This seems simple to a teacher, but parents don’t think the same way we do. They aren’t trained to see learning opportunities and may need resources that can be pulled out and worked on.
To make transitions from recess or gym time to classroom time can be difficult; the students are wound up and still want to play. I like to have a small writing prompt on their desk, so they can cool off, unwind, and prepare themselves for learning time.
