Hey teacher friends!
Today I want to share 6 verb centers that are perfect for grammar instruction for first grade and second grade students. These will make great centers for literacy time, word work, or morning practice.

Why Centers Are A GaME Changer
I love using centers in my classroom because they are so versatile!
Students can work on them independently, in pairs, or in groups. They can work on them during a set center time or work on them after completing the main assignment, and other students need more work time.

These verb centers are great because there are six different options and they each can be used in different ways. That means there are so many activities for your students to complete!
Plus, once these centers have been prepped, they can be used over and over again! What a great way to save time, money, and effort. These centers work best if they are printed in color and laminated for durability.

Popsicle verb Center
This cute popsicle-themed verb game is so much fun! Your students will match parts of the popsicle to the stick to complete the verb puzzle. This activity focuses on sorting verbs by tense.
The popsicle stick features a picture of a verb and the past tense, and the student must find the verb’s present and future tenses.
Candy Jar Verb Center
What kid isn’t going to love this candy jar sorting game?
Students must sort the pieces of candy into the correct parts of speech jars. This resource uses words, not pictures, so students get an added bonus of reading practice!
Gumball Verb center
Need help teaching irregular verbs and their past and present tense forms? I have you covered with my gumball verbs activity!
Students will read the verbs on the colorful gumballs. They will then sort the gumballs into the correct gumball machine for either present or past tense.
This resource focuses on ten irregular verbs in the past and present tense (e.g., grow and grew). So students will be sorting 20 gumballs onto the machines. This sorting verb center is not picture based, so students will get more reading practice while completing this game!
Clip card verb Center
This engaging verb center requires students to use manipulatives to show whether the picture is a verb or not. I like to use clothespins for fine motor practice, but pegs, counters, mini erasers, or pom poms would all work great. You could also have the students circle with dry-erase markers.
There are 16 clip cards included in this set. Students will look at the picture or read the word, then decide if it is a verb or not. They will mark their answer and move to the next card.
Sort & Write verb – sentences
I love this verb center because it has students complete two activities with 1 set of cards.
First, the student will sort the verb picture cards into two piles (regular and irregular verbs). Once they have sorted all the cards, they will write sentences using the verbs.
This activity comes with a black and white recording page for students to use for their sentences. It is totally optional but gives students space for six sentences with lines for handwriting practice. Students could also use a notebook, blank paper, or a whiteboard for their sentences.
Find the verbs in a sentence
I love this resource because it requires students to read short, simple sentences and then identify the verb that is being used. Next, they can use the included recording sheet to write down the verb.
Each sentence strip is numbered, and students will find the corresponding number and write the verb in the box.
If you had a student that was unable to complete the recording sheet, you could have them underline or circle the verb on the sentence strip. Another way to differentiate this resource would be to limit the number of sentence strips the child had to complete at one time.
16 sentence strips and one recording sheet are included in this verb center.
As you can see, these 6 verb centers will be so much fun for your students to complete! They will have this part of speech mastered in no time, all while having fun sorting and reading. This resource will be the perfect addition to your grammar lessons and can be used for years to come!
