Hey there,
Are your students struggling with reading CVCe words? Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered with these free CVCe reading activities!
The freebie I’m going to share today is a selection of reading activities that are phonics based. Students read words, sentences, and passages with long a, long i, long o, and long u sounds.
First, they practice reading CVCe words. They look at the pictures and circle the matching words. There is a bonus list of CVCe words to read (for extra practice)!
Note that all of the worksheets in this freebie come in a long a, long i, long o, and long u version.
Next, they practice reading CVCe words that are in sentences. They cut out the pictures and glue them next to the matching sentences.
Finally, they practice reading CVCe passages. They read the passage and highlight the CVCe words. Then, they answer two comprehension questions.
The wonderful thing about these activities is that they are no prep for you! You can print and go.

Are your students struggling with other areas of phonics?
If so, you’ll be thrilled to hear that these types of activities also come in CVC, blends and digraphs, vowel teams, diphthongs, and r controlled vowels versions!
Short Vowel CVC
Here are the CVC activities. Students work on short vowels (a, e, i, o, and u). This is ideal for Kindergarten and First Grade students who need practice with words like ‘hop’ or ‘cat’.
You could use these activities during reading or phonics lessons!

Pretty cute, huh?
Blends & Digraphs
So, this is the blends and digraphs version. Students will practice sounds like sh, ch, th, and wh, as well as s blends, l blends, and r blends. They’ll be working on words like ‘ship’ and ‘frog’.

I designed the reading passages to be full of digraphs and blends. That way, students are getting lots of practice! For instance, each passage has at least 10 digraphs or blends.
Vowel Teams
Here we have the vowel teams version. This is ideal for students who struggle with long vowels – ai, ay, ea, ee, ie, oa, oe, ue, and ui. This is great for Second Grade students who need practice with words like, ‘float’ or ‘fruit’.
I ensured that the clip art was super cute and engaging for students! When they’ve completed the activities, they can color the pictures!

I made sure that the activities have a hands-on element (where students cut, sort, and paste).
Diphthongs
Next, we have the diphthongs version. The following sounds are covered – aw, au, ew, oo, oi, oy, ou, and ow. Therefore, students will work on words like, ‘pause’ and ‘sound’.

Bossy R
Finally, here is the bossy r version. Students will practice reading r controlled vowels – ar, er, ir, or, and ur. Second Grade students would benefit from practicing words like, ‘whisper’ and ‘storm’.
Each activity has instructions and is quite straight forward to understand and complete. This is great for you! For example, students could do these activities independently during centers/stations.

So, I hope you enjoyed reading this post and most importantly, I hope you like the free CVCe reading activities!
