So, you’ve just finished making a resource. You’re about to upload it to Teachers Pay Teachers. You see the big box for writing a description and you feel overwhelmed. You’ve heard that it’s important to get it right but…
How exactly do you write the perfect product description?
Don’t worry, I’m going to walk you through it step by step!

Why is the description important?
There are two reasons why you need a good description. The first reason is that the TPT algorithm uses the keywords in your description to rank your product in search. You want to show up high in search, right? Of course!
Next up, the description is the place where you persuade the buyer to purchase.
They’ve seen your cover, thumbnails, and preview. They like the look of your product, but they want to be sure that it will suit their needs. So, you’ve got to use the description to make your product sound amazing!
Let’s breakdown how to write one.
The Snippet
First, you need to write a keyword rich snippet. What’s a snippet, you ask? It’s the first three sentences of the description. A buyer can see some of it when they are searching through products.
The snippet is where the algorithm is looking to find your keywords. It uses those words to rank your product. If a teacher searches ‘First Grade Place Value Worksheets’, it would be handy if those words were in your Place Value product’s snippet!
Here is my tip for snippets – always include grade levels, subjects, topics, product types, and features.
For example, ‘These First Grade Math worksheets are perfect for teaching Addition. These no prep activities would be great for Math lessons or Math centers. Your 1st Grade students will love adding the sums and coloring the pictures!’
Guess whose showing up in search? Me! I’ll be showing up for teachers who search terms like ‘First Grade Math’, ‘Addition Worksheets’ or ‘Math centers’. Notice how I also said ‘First Grade’ and ‘1st Grade’? Synonyms are where it’s at!
Features
Once you’ve got your snippet done, you can relax a little. You can focus on listing the awesome features of your product. My tip is to break up your writing into manageable chunks (sentences or small paragraphs) and use bullet points.
Tell the buyer how many pages there are, list the activities included, and explain exactly what your product includes.

Sell, sell, sell
Finally, sing the praises of your product. Tell the buyer how/when they can use your resource and how it will save them time. Make your product sound like a life saver. Simply tell them why they should buy it.
Pro tip – Imagine the buyer was blindfolded and couldn’t see the cover, thumbnails, and preview. Imagine you were talking to them in person. Make it sound irresistible. What would you say?
Also, describe your product as if they can’t see it, because they can’t! You know your product inside and out, but buyers don’t.
Do something for YOU!
Finally, wrap up your description with a few things for you.
- Ask them to follow you on TPT and include a link.
- Remind them that they’ll get credits if they leave feedback.
- Ask to connect and link to your social media accounts.
- Upsell (and link to) any similar products they may like.
