5 Reasons Why PowerPoints are an Awesome Lesson Warm-Up

I fell in love with PowerPoints before I had even graduated as a teacher! I created my first PowerPoints in my final practicum and I have been addicted ever since.

So I want to talk about the power of PowerPoints as a lesson warm-up, as well as an introduction/revision of a concept.

When most people think of PowerPoints, they probably think of business meetings! However, they can be a hugely effective teaching tool to keep students engaged when you are starting a new topic or revising a concept.

1.) Introducing a Topic

One of the first PowerPoints I ever created was for teaching procedure (how-to) writing. I was teaching 2^nd grade on my placement and I just couldn’t think of an engaging way to introduce the concept. ‘Talking at the students’ seemed dull and I knew it wouldn’t engage them. I had an interactive whiteboard, but I couldn’t find any good YouTube Videos. Then…inspiration hit! I’d make a PowerPoint!

This PowerPoint is one of my best-selling resources on Teachers Pay Teachers now. Thousands of students have sat and watched it and I’m so glad to have helped teachers in a small way.

2.) Revising a Topic

Once I started making more and more PowerPoints, I realised that they were great as revision tools. I would use them as a warm-up to remind students of what they needed to know that lesson.

The PowerPoints were also great at the end of a unit to revise what we had learnt. Later in the year, I would sometimes bring them out if we were re-visiting something.

3.) Banish misconceptions

Sometimes you need a warm up and some good practise of a concept before you start an activity. I love using my Math PowerPoints as a warm up. Students can practise telling the time or recognising shapes as a class. This helps iron out any misconceptions or errors before the students complete an activity on their own.

4.) Collaboration, Collaboration!

I like the collaborative element of working together and solving problems as a class. This makes the lesson engaging and involves everyone. It’s also great to call students up to choose the right answer and support each other if they make a mistake.

5.) Tapping into a love for technology

Kids nowadays love technology. They are entranced when things are moving around on a computer. I love tapping in to this and ensuring I get 100% engagement.
